The Research ...

Many companies now provide massage services to their employees on a regular basis, while others use it as a reward for a job well done or a relief during a particularly stressful time.

Calvert Group, a Bethesda, Md.-based mutual fund firm, has offered massages to its employees for 16 years. The company hires a masseuse twice a week, and about half of its 180 employees are regular users of this service. The company pays the full cost of the massages, which amounts to about $29,000 per year, according to Dennis Truskey, Vice President of human resources.

“Massages appear to have helped to improve morale and reduce stress, illness and absence”, Truskey says. “There were definitely legitimate business reasons for doing it," he comments. “It's a very good benefit. We're extremely satisfied. It's not something we would even consider taking away. ...it should and could, over time, reduce your health and welfare costs.”
